Materials
Donna uses a wide variety of natural and some man-made materials to compose their work. Sea shells are the most obvious, but starfish, sand dollars, sea fans and dried florals also add distinctive highlights. All organic raw materials are legally harvested from around the globe.
We are very experimental and have found some varieties of shells which appear drab and plain on the surface but actually have intricate internal structures and beautiful pearlescent inside surfaces. Using diamond-bladed saws and a variety of jewelers and lapidary tools, we are continually experimenting to find fresh, new designs and textures in sectioned shells. Dyes, enamels, acrylics, polishes and glitters expand the visual possibilities in parallel with natures intrinsic beauty.
Frames are hand-assembled of wood with a variety of rigid backings for the material canvas. Textile coverings range from cottons and canvas, to burlaps and silks.
The many fasteners and adhesives we use have proven durable under normal indoor usage. However, we do not recommend displaying or storing your nautical art in areas of extreme temperature or humidity.
Color Match
We use materials with both subtle and vibrant colors to create a rich, pleasing appearance to each work. However, please note that while we make every effort to ensure that the pictures on our website truly represent the original work, we can not guarantee an exact color match on your monitor due to many variables beyond our control.
